Stage Manager
Job Description:
The Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic Association (WMPA) is seeking a part-time Stage Manager for the 2026-2027 Season. The Stage Manager provides indispensable practical and organizational support to the music director, musicians, and artistic team throughout the production and rehearsal process, and supervises onstage and backstage activity during performances to make sure the show runs as smoothly as possible.

Work Environment:
This role is expected to help create a professional work environment and is required to work in a variety of locations and venues. WashMetPhil rehearses at the Virginia Theological Seminary at the Addison Academic Center and performs at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial Theater and Schlesinger Concert Hall. Must be able to travel, and work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed. Must be able to adapt to multiple buildings / theater venues. Must be able to be on their feet throughout the show, lift up to 30 lbs, and traverse several flights of stairs. Must be able to travel to rehearsal and performance sites. All duties take place in person with prompt remote communication with the music director and personnel manager as needed.
Compensation:
This role is designed as a part-time independent contractor position. Compensation per concert is $350 per concert, payable after the concert has concluded. Total annual compensation is $1,750.
Start Date: On Wednesday, September 23rd, 2026.

Role and Responsibilities:
Primary responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
REHEARSALS
- Approximately 1 hour prior to rehearsal:
- Set up Conductor’s podium and stand
- Prepare rehearsal room, placing chairs for each WashMetPhil musician
- Assist percussionists, personnel manager, and music director as needed.
- At the end of each rehearsal:
- With precise care and attention to detail, arrange room according to pre-rehearsal set-up
- Return podium and stand to designated storage area
- Assist percussionists, personnel manager, and music director as needed
PERFORMANCES
- Approximately 1 hour prior to sound check:
- Set up Conductor’s podium and stand
- Prepare theater, placing chairs for each WMP instrument section
- Assist percussionists, personnel manager, and music director as needed
- Test lighting equipment and settings in collaboration with the music director
- Provide additional support to the music director and artistic team as needed
- During the concert:
- Ensure lighting cues are executed with precision and timeliness
- Help with transitions between musical numbers as needed
- Other duties as assigned
- After the concert:
- Strike the theater in collaboration with the venue staff, music director, and musicians to ensure contract compliance
Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
- Must be 18 years or older. (High School Seniors are eligible.)
- Familiarity with orchestra rehearsals, performances, and set up.
- Ability to build and maintain professional, positive relationships with co-workers, venue personnel, and WashMetPhil musicians.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to multi-task.
- Ability to maintain poise and control under pressure.
- Experience working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with a demanding workload.
