Congratulations to Octavio Vasquez, winner of the 2009-10 WMPA Composition Competition for his composition, "The Second Gate."
The fourth annual WMPA Composition Competition is here! The purpose of this unique competition is to identify outstanding composers in the Mid-Atlantic region and to award one winner each year with an unequaled opportunity for performance exposure by showcasing two of his/her major works during WMP's next concert season.
Who can apply
WMPA conducts its annual composition competition to promote the works of talented composers from the Mid-Atlantic region. The competition is open to composers of any age from the Mid-Atlantic states (DE, DC, MD, NJ, NY, PA, VA, and WV).
How it works
From compositions submitted over the summer, three finalists are chosen by a panel composed of the Music Director, musicians from WMP, and members of the Board of Directors. WMP will perform the selected compositions from the three finalists during the February concert series of the regular season. A jury consisting of WMP musicians, audience members, and members of the Board of Directors will then select a final winner. WMP will perform two major works by the winning composer during the following concert season.

Congratulations to our past winners, Steven Gerber (2007-08) and Charlie Barnett (2008-09).
